Our Heavy duty contractor cords are made with type SOW / SOOW electrical wire.
The "S" in SOOW stands for "severe service cord". The "OO" stands for "Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket and Oil-Resistant Interior Insulation". The "W" stands for " Weather Resistant for indoor and outdoor use". Other designations and what they mean. Our recommendation, to avoid any wire with the letter "T" anywhere in the designation. Example STO, STW, SJT. The "T" stands for "Thermoplastic". Plastic wire is not recommended for severe service. thermoplastic is not recommended in cooler temperatures as thermoplastic will get very stiff, in contrast SJO or SOW remains very flexible in very cold conditions. It is our recommendation to avoid any wire starting with the letters "ST" in the designation anytime your application is for ruff service, or cool conditions. The "J" in "SJ" stands for " Junior Service 300 volts ". Thin jacketed wire is not recommended for severe service. Unless you are looking for a lightweight wire like you would find on a household appliance avoid type SJ wire. |
